Project location: New York, NY · Project context: 2019 · Prepared by POPUP from the project archive in October 2026.
The objects named in Illmatic became a way into its world. Nas's anniversary experience connected Queensbridge settings, documentary viewing and everyday objects with the memories carried by the record.
How can a music exhibition make an album's details tangible?
An album’s smallest details can become the most meaningful way into its story.
Let the lyrics shape the space: reconstruct Queensbridge settings and collect real everyday objects named across Illmatic.

Recreate the world behind the record
The basketball court and graffiti alleys brought the physical language of Queensbridge into Manhattan. A large live mural connected the experience with an artist from Queens.
Let the stories surround the photographs
Guests entered a subway-car installation to watch a documentary, then explored behind-the-scenes photographs with interviews and stories they could listen to.
Turn the lyrics into an archive
A central installation assembled everyday objects named in Illmatic: E&J bottles, Timberland boots, Sony Walkmans and Ron G mixtapes. These familiar things gave fans a physical connection to the album and its era. For Nas, seeing them together became a walk through the memories behind the lyrics.
The planning lesson
Look for details fans already hold close: a place, an object or a line. Those references can organize a room more meaningfully than oversized artwork alone. Give each installation its own mode of discovery while keeping the album's story continuous.
Who delivered the experience
POPUP created immersive installations that translated the album’s world into a walk-through experience: a childhood basketball court, participatory graffiti alleys, a live mural by a Queens-based artist, a subway-car documentary setting and an audio-led behind-the-scenes photo gallery.
Presented with Sony Music / Certified Classics. Hennessy supported the opening celebration. Launch photographs: Madison McGaw/BFA; exhibition detail: Keenan Higgins / The Source.
What the experience made possible
The exhibition connected Illmatic’s stories, places and cultural references through a participatory environment for fans.
